By requiring an environmentally friendly flame retardant with sufficiently comprehensive certifications (e.g. fire protection, installation methods and weather resistance), developers can ensure that the good environmental and health impacts of wood products are not reduced due to fire protection.

Industrial fire protection of wood products using Nordtreat’s translucent flame retardants is a cost-effective solution because the products are ready to be installed and will not require a re-treatment during the construction phase or soon thereafter. Only cut surfaces are treated with a flame retardant on-site in accordance with instructions.

A non-toxic flame retardant also increases the occupational safety level for builders and simplifies on-site storage operations. On-site fire protection treatments can only be carried out using non-toxic flame retardants.

FIRE SAFETY REGULATIONS FOR WOOD PRODUCTS

Wood products treated with Nordtreat flame retardants meet the strict fire protection requirements concerning public, commercial and residential buildings. Fire protection in compliance with the requirements of Euroclass B-s1, d0 is required, for example in Finland, on the facades of fire class P1 buildings that are under 56 metres in height as well as on the interior walls and ceilings of many class P1 and P2 buildings.

DURABILITY OF FIRE PROTECTION

In indoor use, certified wood products treated with the non-toxic NT DECO flame retardant maintain their fire safety properties throughout a building’s life cycle, unless the surface is mechanically damaged. In this case, the damaged area needs to be re-treated.

When used on external cladding and balcony structures, Nordtreat flame retardants protect the wood from the effects of sunlight and weather and they also strengthen the wood’s natural protection against mould and decay. In outdoor use, re-treatment is required after 5 to 15 years, depending on the building. It is recommended that the re-treatment is done using the same product as the original fire protection treatment.

EMISSIONS AND INDOOR USE

Nordtreat flame retardants are pH neutral and water-based and have low emissions. The best emission class M1 indicates that a flame retardant has low emissions and is therefore well suited for indoor use. In addition, Nordtreat products have the Indoor Air Comfort® certification as well as the BREEAM and LEED v4 certifications.
